How a Knitter Caused Controversy

When you think of knitters, you don’t imagine their creations causing a stir. But one knitting group in the southwest received complaints for crocheting a band of naked figures.
Uncovered

The Hive Five’s group of bare creations included a policeman, a Rastafarian, a vicar, a woman with pearls and a Morris dancer, but they weren’t appreciated by everyone who passed by them on display in a haberdasher’s window in Shepton Mallet. Although they were raising money for charity, some people didn’t see the funny side and took to social media to complain, forcing the haberdashery and café owner to cover them up with censor strips.

According to the BBC  the group of knitters wanted to let people “have a laugh”, but as the café and shop is close to local schools, one mother complained about the woolly private parts. Thankfully it didn’t stop the group from raising vital funds for the Air Ambulance, with more than Ł100 donated in just one day and plenty of praise too.

Colourful Creations

The knitters, who meet up regularly to help each other create wonderful crochet and knitting items, spent about a week creating each unique figure. No doubt they have brought the world of knitting to light for others and may have inspired them to pick up some needles.

While their creation is highly skilful, there are many much easier knitting kits that those new to knitting or with very little experience can do. From basic scarves and blankets to more elaborate toy animals and cushions, everything is available in the range of knitting kits from Wool Couture.

From beginners’ knitting kits which have simple instructions and are fairly simple to make, to more elaborate designs for those who have a bit of experience and more time, there are all sorts of knitting kits available. Although, it’s unlikely you’ll find any naked figures like the ones in Shepton Mallet.

As for the Hive Five, they have not been deterred from another charity project and are now planning a window display based on the Glastonbury festival, complete with compost toilets.
